Map of Favorite Drives.
Try out this Google Maps & YouTube mash-up. This maps our favorite drives around Austin along with videos of those drives.
If you'd like to add your favorite drive and video, see the tutorial at the bottom of this page.
Here's how to add your trips to our map:
- First, you'll need to map the route to generate an encoded polyline. This can be done using Google's Interactive Polyline Encoder Utility.
- Next, copy and past both the Encoded Polyline and the Encoded Levels (which are output by the Interactive Polyline Encoder Utility) into the appropriate fields of the submission form below. This represents the route and how many points are used as you zoom the map out (respectively).
- Decide on a LatLon coordinate for the marker of your route; typically, this should be the point at the start of your route. Enter those coordinates in the form below as well.
- Enter the URL of the YouTube video that corresponds to your route in the form below. You must have already uploaded your video.
- Submit the form!
That's it! Then your route will be added to the map that you see here. Note there are a few guidelines to follow:
- Limit the number of points in your route or polyline. This will enable the routes to be generated more quickly. [Paths with large # of points will not be added to the map!]
- We recommend you store a copy of the polyline and coordinates for each point. This is because our mash-up is currently based on Google's v2 API. The v3 API is just now appearing and may have a different scheme for generating polylines. You may need to resubmit your data at a later time as we upgrade to the v3 API.
- We will likely maintain the current initial zoom level for the map above. So you may need to zoom out and pan in order to go to your route. We'll adjust that depending on the number and location of routes that are added.
